Frame-Induced Packet Discarding: An Efficient Strategy for Video Networking
نویسندگان
چکیده
In order to provide efficient frame loss guarantees for video communication over ATM-like fast packet switched networks, we propose a simple to implement, yet effective, strategy called Frame-Induced Packet Discarding (FIPD), in which, upon detection of loss of a threshold number (determined by an application’s video encoding scheme) of packets belonging to a video frame, the network attempts to discard all the remaining packets of that frame. Performance simulations are shown to demonstrate the efficacy of the FIPD strategy; networks employing FIPD exhibit close to two-fold increase in the number of video channels that they can support.

Quality of Service and Performance Evaluation of Congestion Control for Multimedia Networking
The most important components of multimedia networking are video streaming and synchronization. In video networking, the frames are split into smaller packets at the application layer. The packets of a frame are assembled before being processed at the receiver. For realtime video streaming, packet acknowledgments and retransmission are not practical. When congestion occurs, some packets may be ...
متن کاملAn adaptive and selective cell drop policy with dynamic data partitioning for best effort video over ATM
In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new MPEGbased video delivery framework for use with ATM best effort services (e.g. Available Bit Rate and Unspecified Bit Rate). The presented framework relies on three components : a video-oriented cell discarding scheme, which adaptively and selectively adjusts drop level to switch buffer occupancy and video cell payload types; a dynamic frame-level pr...
متن کاملA Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding
Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...
متن کاملAn Efficient Packet Discarding Scheme for On-demand Video Streaming
Streaming services over the Internet are expected to grow rapidly in the near future. However, bursty packet losses caused by buffer overflow at routers are a serious problem in these services, and are responsible for degradation of the Quality of Service (QoS). Active Queue Management (AQM) that discards the packets at routers is effective for avoiding the buffer overflow but results in the de...
متن کاملAdaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience
This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...
